Behind the scenes of the Hotel & Restaurant Waldheim there live and work real characters. This includes the team and your hosts Erika, Alexander and senior host Hermann.

Host Hermann is your chef and king of the kitchen. Together with his team, he creates the most delicious dishes for our hungry guests every day. For breakfast he spoils you with homemade farmhouse bread, homemade jams, and spicy home-smoked bacon.

Hermann’s son Alexander and his wife Erika, work in the service area. Service at the Hotel Waldheim means everything from holiday experiences, to cross-country skiing lessons, to lending an ear to our guests. If you don’t have any plans for winter yet, how about cross-country skiing lessons with Alexander, a state-certified ski and cross-country skiing instructor. And it just so happens that the cross-country ski run starts right on our doorstep. Amazing, isn’t it!

Once upon a time:

It all started with a step in the right direction

  • In 1974 Hermann and Johanna Mair buy the Gasthof Waldheim in Martello
  • By asphalting the valley’s road in the 80s Martello paves the way for holiday guests.
  • The Martello cross-country skiing track is built and Hermann himself is responsible for the grooming.

The Martello valley has always focused on soft tourism – no mass tourism, no ski lifts, no endless hustle and bustle. Instead, you will find untouched landscape sceneries, groundhogs whistling, natural spectacles all year, a cross-country skiing paradise and perfect conditions for a ski-tour adventure. All of this in the middle of one of the largest nature reserves in Europe, the Stelvio National Park. Satisfaction and sustainability are the key values.

A new era

  • In the 90s, Waldheim achieves its breakthrough: once an insider tip, the Gasthof is now developing into a renowned restaurant.
  • Conversions and extensions follow, in order to offer the visitors a comfortable ambience.

2002 marks the beginning of biathlon sport in Martello. It’s the beginning of a new era, not only for Val Martello but also for the Hotel Restaurant Waldheim.

Quality is key

Over the years, we have constantly improved the quality of our services. The main focus is on cuisine, spa, winter sports and professional ski rental.

  • “Slow Food” finds its way into Val Martello, at the same time, the “Communità del cibo Val Martello” is founded.
  • In 2016 the hotel is expanded, the dining room shines in new splendour, new suites and rooms are built.
  • Finally, in 2019, the construction of a very special highlight takes place: The year-round heated mountain panoramic pool with enclosure option.

The Waldheim is a celebration of South Tyrolean warmth and hospitality. You come as a stranger and leave as a friend. From the second visit on it feels like coming “home”. The many long-time regular guests prove it. I’m often a hotel guest, both professionally and privately. But what the Waldheim offers, is truly unique and you have to experience it yourself: Three stars, that are actually four.
