Chapel St. Maria in der Schmelz

This small (and well worth seeing) chapel was built in 1711 and is considered a place of power. It is only a few minutes away from our hotel.

Plima gorge hike

Four gorge scenes make the impressive natural spectacle of the Plima gorge come alive: The “trowel” in the gorge, the “panoramic crescent” with a view out of the valley, the “observation pulpit” and the suspension bridge that leads over the Plima gorge and the thundering waterfall. Highlight: The suspension bridge is accessible in both summer and winter.

Obscure customs, old local traditions, many amusing incidents, work and privations - in the modern museum of local history you can learn in permanent and temporary exhibitions what life as a mountain farmer in Val Martello once was like.

Culinary tour of the lake

Fancy a leisurely walk? Every year a very special event takes place in August: all around the high alpine Lago di Gioveretto, food stalls offer delicious regional treats, traditional arts and craft are on sale and for the kids, fun is guaranteed thanks to a great entertainment program.

South Tyrolean Strawberry Festival

You may have noticed that Martello is also known as the “Berry Valley” for a reason. In fact, it is considered the “highest-lying strawberry-producing area in Europe.” - a title that deserves to be celebrated! The Strawberry Festival takes place every year on the last weekend of June. Every three years the Strawberry Queen is also elected, who is considered the ambassador of the sweet fruit.

Martello Transhumance

At the end of summer (September), the cattle are brought down from the mountain pastures into the valley with a big ceremony called Almabtrieb (transhumance). The animals are festively decorated, there is music, food and drinks, and a colourful supporting programme.

Biathlon & ski touring events

Various winter sports events take place in Val Martello: the Biathlon IBU Cup with national and international starters, the Coppa Italia (Italian championship), the German Cup and the famous ski touring race, the Marmotta Trophy.
